In a sepia canon,
misty with fog.
Sleeping in the shadows,
drizzle on lush sod.
Between brooding boulders,
cliffs overhanging, and constantly weeping.
She sees a fishermen’s village
on the shores of a lake.
Tiny wood houses
with roofs of wood shake.
Boats on the water,
boats tied to piers.
Nets, floats and weirs.
She hides her desperation,
puts on her bravest face.
How can a lady find shelter and food,
in such a backwater place.
She steps oh so lightly
on the old muddy trail.
Cormorants hush
when they see her face so drawn and pale.
Through bamboo gates, and up just ahead.
she can see three lamps flickering.
At the edge of a garden,
soft, dark and green.
The tiniest tea house
she ever had seen.
The path there so crooked,
on stones across a creek,
the front door was hardly up to her knees.
As she looked at it puzzled,
a friendly voice spoke:
"We love to have strangers,
in our little tea house.
We welcome all travelers,
in our little tea house."
“Sir, you truly are kind,
and yes, I am traveling.
It's not by my choice.
But your entry is so low
and your doorway's so small.
I'm afraid I'm too large
to get through.”
(Ah, but that's what everyone here must do.}
“We love to have strangers,
in our little tea house.
We welcome all travelers,
in our little tea house.
The doorway is small,
the tables are low.
The fare here is simple
and the service is slow.
So nobody too big,
ever comes around.
To our little tea house.”
So she knelt down,
she crawled through,
into the lamplight,
by some counts,
she grew!
Enjoyed the best tea,
on the finest of nights.
Savored the dried fish,
and the fresh bowl of rice.
“We love to have strangers,
in our little tea house.
We welcome all travelers,
in our little tea house.
The doorway is small,
the tables are low.
The fare here is simple
and the service is slow.
So nobody too big, ever comes around.
To our little tea house.
To our little tea house.
